Living and learning the West Melton School Way: Empowering our Learning Communities for the Future
Children with Special Needs
he school recognizes that children have special needs and has a policy to guide the development of special programmes.
These programmes seek to develop processes,
skills and knowledge.
The procedures used to identify
special needs children are very
comprehensive and involve
parents,teachers and specialists.
Out of school agencies and therapists are involved in programmes when applicable
Our fund holder for ORRS students is Waitaha Learning Centre.
A very successful Reading Recovery programme is run daily for
six months of the year working with individual 6 year olds.
There are 7 Teacher Aides working part time in the school in classrooms, with small groups or with individuals.
A Gifted and Talented programme operates as a separate class during the year. Small groups of children are selected from across the classes and are given the opportunity to explore subjects they are passionate about.
Teachers successfully provide accelerated learning in classroom
programmes and interchange systems are used to address the range of talents and abilities.
