Gifted and Talented at West Melton
“A gifted student shows an ability and/or potential in one or more areas, significantly greater than that of their peers. A talented student demonstrates a high level of performance in one or more areas, significantly greater than that of their peers.”
At West Melton we plan programmes aimed to meet the individual needs of all students, including those identified as Gifted and Talented. We use differentiated programmes to meet the needs of the learners within the classroom and use inquiry learning and higher order thinking strategies to challenge our gifted learners.
Extra Programmes Available
During the year we offer a range of extension opportunities for our students outside of the classroom in a wide range of areas.
Some opportunities previously offered were:
● Creative Writing
● Mandarin
● Mentoring with experts from the Community in the areas of Science, Spanish and Graphic Design
● Lunch-time clubs including Chess, Science, Literacy, Minecraft and Mathematics
● Zone and Canterbury Tournaments for Team Sports as well as Swimming, Athletics, Triathlon, Duathlon and Cross Country
● External competitions - Canta maths, Epro8, Literacy Quiz, Chess Tournaments, ICAS, CEM Competitions,Speech Competitions and the Otago Problem Challenge.
